The Interview

I got to interview the lovely and talented Kimberly Loth author of the incredible Thorn Series! This amazing new story is witty, dangerous and has truely powerful characters.

Kimberly is a wonderful author whose stories are captivating and unique, characters that you never truly leave behind because they go on with you forever.

Q: Can you please tell us a little about your book Obsidian and what inspired you write it?
Obsidian is about a girl, Aspen, who is wild and loves anything that has a little bit of danger and her relations with Obsidian, who is a dragon, but also a human. She has no idea they are the same.
Inspiration is such a hard question to answer and honestly, I started it so long ago that I can’t remember. Obsidian was the first novel I wrote and it started just as a few character development exercises.
Q: What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
Obsidian has evolved so much in the last several years. When I picked it back up last year and decided to publish it, I was surprised by how much I had changed as a writer. The final draft still has a few of my favorite scenes from when I wrote the first draft, but when I first envisioned the book, I could’ve never imagined it ending up like this.
Q: What made you want to write as story with a with Dragon shifters?
I had just decided to start writing (seven years ago) when I read a short book by a well known author about a dragon who had a human form. But it was written in such a way that you didn’t get into anyone’s head and I felt so distant from the characters. Obsidian and Aspen were born from me wondering what a relationship between a dragon and human would feel like.
Q: I loved the book! But what is it about your book that makes you know your book stand out from the crowd?
Oh, I don’t know :-). You know, the thing I love about books is that no matter how many good ones there are out there, there are always more good books to read. I guess I just wanted Obsidian to be another one of those books.
Q: In Obsidian we meet the Dragon King. Did you know at the beginning he would struggle so with his crown or did it come with the progress of the book?
Yeah, I always knew he would struggle. I mean that’s part of the whole theme of the book. Take the crown or love the girl. But he’s grew a lot as I evolved as a writer.
Q: What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
Obsidian has been with me my entire writing journey. Even when I was working on The Thorn Chronicles, I would tinker with Obsidian from time to time. I feel like Sid and Aspen are a part of me.
Q: What inspires you?
My fans. I get emails or Facebook messages everyday and I’m always so touched. Never in my wildest dreams as a young adult did I ever think I would have fans. Those emails keep me writing.

Q: How do you feel about ebooks vs. print books and alternative vs. conventional publishing?
Oh, this is a loaded question.  I live overseas so I prefer ebooks (because they travel) but I still like holding a book in my hands. Really, I don’t think it matters as long as it keeps me reading. I’m not a fan of conventional publishing. I like to be in control of my books and my covers. I’m not going to say never, because anytime I say never I always eat my words, but I can’t see myself publishing traditionally. It just doesn’t appeal to me. The way I publish I can get out 5-6 books a year. If I were publishing traditionally it would only be 1-2. I wouldn’t want to do that to my fans.

Q: What is next for you? Do you have any scheduled upcoming releases or works in progress?
I’m hoping to finish The Dragon Kings series by the end of the year (five books) and I’m co-writing an adult romance series that I’m really excited about.

Q: Thank you so much for the interview, Kimberly Loth. Would you like to tell my readers where they can find you on the web and where everyone can buy your book?

Yes, thank you! All my books are listed on my website www.kimberlyloth.com. Also, I use Facebook as my primary means of communicating with my fans. You can find that page here: www.facebook.com/kimberlylothbooks
