The Interview

I got to interview and meet the lovely Susan Ee Author of Angelfall. I first read this book when it first came out and have read it several times since, it is an exciting and dangerous tale full of heartstopping action and intrigue.

Susan knows how to push the boundaries when it comes to writing tragic tales and this one is one of the most epic of all time! If you haven't yet gotten your copy of Angelfall do so now!

Q: Are there any plans to film the story? 

Wonderful Hollywood producers are working on the film adaptation right now!

Q: How did you come up with the name Penryn?

There really is a Penryn exit off Interstate 80. :)



Q: What kind of research did you do––if any––to make those fight sequences more believable, and/or do you have first-hand experience?

I try to experience it first-hand. A little goes a long way. For instance, now that Penryn has the sword, I figured I should know what that feels like. So I took a sword fighting class. It was fun! :) 

Will the book sequels also be self-published or do you have a publisher now?

The US/Canada version will be published through Amazon through their new imprint, Skyscape (previously Amazon Childrens Publishing). The UK, Australia, New Zealand versions will be published through Hodder & Stoughton. There will also be various translations through publishers in other countries

Q: Some readers have voiced disbelief at the possibility that the world could be in the state we find it in the book a "mere" 6 weeks after the angels appeared - what made you settle on that amount of time?

I picked 6 weeks after the attack because it's so close to our regular life, and yet, in my opinion, it's long enough for our world to change into a frightening new place.

6 DAYS after the Katrina disaster, police officers shot unarmed civilians. They killed two and wounded four. Soon after, the news shows were talking about unconfirmed reports of cannibalism in the area (unrelated to the shootings other than common panic).

I think that it's POSSIBLE that the world can fall apart to the extent that's described in Angelfall in 6 weeks. I certainly hope that it wouldn't, but I think a world-wide attack coupled with disasters could reshape the world into something almost unrecognizable. 

Q: Did you know how the ending would be when you dreamed up these characters and then need to build the journey to that end, or rather, do you dream the journey as you write and come to the conclusion later?

I dream the journey as I write. For me, it makes everything more fun and interesting. 

Q: Do you listen to any music as you write?

I prefer to write when it's quiet or in cafes. Music is a mood creator, and I want the characters and scenes to determine the mood without being influenced by music. 

Q: Is Raffe the Raphael? As in, the archangel who was supposed to be a healer and all? I'd been wondering why an archangel who was supposed to be a healer seemed so clueless about reattaching his wings?

Yes, Raffe is THE Raphael, but he is a soldier, not a healer in my story.

My understanding of angel lore is that there is no one accepted body of knowledge about them. For instance, there seems to be far more angel stories in the Muslim culture than in the Christian culture.

My research has brought me to the conclusion that I can pick and choose which angel lore to follow.

I know that it's popular to believe that Raphael is the healer, but as far as I know, it doesn't say that in the Bible, nor does Enoch (who talks extensively about angels) say that. Even if they did, I obviously take creative liberties with the angels and their hierarchies, although I try not to contradict ancient text. 

Q: Did you hire a professional editor to look over your novel before you self-published?

Instead of using a professional editor, I had six beta readers give me feedback on Angelfall. I also had a volunteer copy edit the book before I launched it.
