WW4BB & IFB Presents: A Spotlight & Review of Gathering Water by Regan Claire

Posted by wiccawitch4 on 6:57:00 am

Release date: January 26th 2014
Purchase: Amazon

Gathering Water

Synopsis

Della Doe Deare isn't like most people. Most people begin their life on the day they enter the world; the day they're born. Della, well, hers began on the day she turned eighteen. After all, it was the day she first heard her real name, and that of her mother. With nothing but a couple of duffel bags and a folder full of questions, she travels to coastal North Carolina to claim a house that she inherited from a grandmother she never knew.

She has two goals: discover why her mother ran away from home all those years ago, and avoid the family that had left her to rot in an inept foster care system. Hard to do when the family she's been trying to avoid is dragging her into an unimaginable world... a world on the brink of war, and both sides want her dead.

All Della ever wanted was to know who she was, but her journey to self-discovery might just lead to destruction.

My Review

Gathering Water by Regan Claire
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

this book was freaking amazing! Regan Claire is an awesome writer and I couldn't put this one down! I loved the characters and the story rocked! everywhere the story went there was something new and interesting to love.

Della is such a strong character in this story and my heart goes out to her several times as her past is brought up, but I am even more impressed by how she handles herself at every turn. my favourite of all the characters were Dove and her cousin Cash these two and there antics cracked me up over and over!

The magic and the battles in the story blew me away! it was so creative and amazing! I would so love to be able to do these things! Regan Claire explains everything in such a detail as if you were watching it on t.v and I would so love to see this book as a movie! it would kick ass!

you don't get to see much of the bad guys in this first book as they are mostly talked about but what you do see of them is terrifying! I sure wouldn't want to be up against them even with all that magic!

if you haven't read this yet I highly recommend it! a great story for all you fantasy readers out there!

Excerpt

Eighteen. We all expect our lives to change when that
number finally hits us. It is, after all, the year you are finally
an adult, finally in charge of your own life. Most people wake
up on that monumental birthday and run to the mirror,
convinced that they were magically transformed during
their 8 hours of sleep into a bona-fide adult. Others just lie
in bed, thinking about the momentous changes that are
sure to be coming.
I’m sure there are some people who just go about their
day as if nothing were different and usually nothing really
is. I like to think that those are the people who are most
content with their lives... The people who have no unanswered
questions, no haunting pasts, and no uncertainty
about their futures.
When my 18th birthday arrived I didn’t rush to the mirror
eager to see my grownup self. And being in the foster
system since birth kept me from seeing that day as if it
were any other.
I probably lay in bed for 10 minutes before my alarm
finally convinced me to get up. 18 was huge. It was a birthday
I had waited impatiently and anxiously for. It meant I was
legally an adult and for foster kids like myself that’s a big
deal; it meant that I was no longer a ward of the state. Finally,
it meant control. I didn’t have to worry about getting a new
family if I made a mistake. No more psych evaluations, no
more child services, no more any of that kind of stuff that
made up my life. I was free!
It also meant that I was, suddenly, responsible for myself.
Just the day before I had a team of people to answer to;
people that fed me, clothed me, told me what to do and
when to do it. If I had felt like a prisoner to the system
before, I felt as if I were adrift at sea now.
After getting out of bed I gingerly stepped over my two
duffel bags’ worth of clothes out into the hallway and made
my way downstairs. Most of my room was already packed. I
didn’t have many personal belongings, which would make
moving that much easier since Margaret, my foster mother,
was no longer responsible for providing me with a room.
Margaret was, as always, already up when I walked into
the kitchen. She was an early riser and was usually drinking
her second cup of coffee by the time I rolled out of bed.
The previous eight months had actually been pretty decent
because of her. She was an elderly woman, with salt and
pepper hair and a disapproving mouth; not exactly warm
and cuddly, but she treated me well enough. She kept mostly
to herself except at mealtimes, when she insisted that we
be together. I’d had worse rules. I think she appreciated
my company since her own children so rarely visited, only
twice since I moved in.
Though my world already felt so different, that morning’s
routine continued as it usually did. Margaret finished
making her oatmeal and started on the coffee while I poured
milk into my Lucky Charms, then we both sat down to eat
in companionable silence at the beige card table she kept
in the kitchen. When the meal was finished I grabbed our
mismatched dishes and brought them to the sink, before
lathering them up with lemon scented dish soap and playing
the part of dishwasher, as I always did. When I reached
for the flamingo-decorated dish towel to start drying, I was
surprised to find that Margaret had already started on the job.
“I can finish this up, Margaret.”
“I don’t doubt your abilities Della, but I can at least dry
the dishes on your birthday.” Not knowing what else to do
I thanked her, then turned to go back down the hallway
into my soon-to-be former room, but was stopped by a
tentative touch on my arm.
“Della, the new kid isn’t supposed to be here for another
couple of weeks. You’re welcome to stay here until then,”
Margaret said, surprising me completely. I knew that she
was going to get another ward soon; she’d been fostering
consistently for the past 10 years and was a way station of
sorts, only holding on to a kid for a few months until a
better place was found.
“Um, thanks Margaret, but I’m already packed and it
won’t take that long to move my things into the apartment
above the convenience store.”
My job at that store had been a lifeline. I mean, the pay
wasn’t exactly great, but in a smaller town the job options
were limited, especially since school was out. My boss Marv
was letting me rent the small room above it for cheap in
exchange for fixing it up and making the space livable, since
it barely fit that bill.
After thanking her for the offer I went on to my room. I
was supposed to meet one last time with my social worker
that morning, and even though she no longer had any say in
my life, old habits die hard and I put on my nicest sundress
and made sure my mousy brown hair was properly subdued.
The meeting really should have been before my birthday,
to see how I was preparing for the transition, but things
kept getting held up. Sara was by far the best social worker
I’d had, mostly because she hadn’t been doing the job long
enough to become disenchanted with it; she still cared. She
was the one who got me placed with Margaret instead of
in another group home.
I didn’t hear her car pull up, but I knew when she arrived
all the same. I always had good, even uncanny instincts for
that type of thing, and I was at the door by the time she
was up the steps. This would be the last time I saw her, but
I wasn’t expecting this particular visit to affect my life in
any way—I thought that meeting represented the end of my

old life, but really it marked the beginning of my new one.

About the Author

A Tidewater girl born and bred, Regan Claire's first friend and love was the Atlantic. Growing up being told the legends about Pirates and American Natives common in coastal VA and NC, coupled with being an only child, did wonders for her imagination; Regan had one foot in fantasy-land ever since, a trait her dear husband heroically endures (and one she secretly hopes her daughters have inherited). Her family moved inland to Nashville while she was entering tweenhood and not a day went by that she didn't miss her childhood playmate and her crashing waves. Nashville has her perks though, namely the love of Regan's life and their two sweet girls. Their insane mutt-dog and the stray cat that refuses to leave their porch aren't too bad either. Regan loves fairytales A LOT, teen movies (preferably with dancing or singing), reads entirely too much, and is constantly late.

Practical Advice For Beginning Fantasy/Paranormal Writers:

As an author, it’s your bread and butter to let your mind run amuck. And it’s fun! What other profession encourages you to go into the darkest corners of your conscious, where evil twins lurk about, alien invasions are commonplace, sinister villainy is an art form, and swoon-worthy gentlemen always come gallivanting to the rescue? You won’t find that at the average office building, I’ll tell you that much. So while your friends are talking about filling out T.P.S. reports, you can proudly tell them all about the witches, haunted houses, and rising body count you encountered during your travels into your imagination on your quest to write a book.

Firstly, there’s no right or wrong way to write one. If you’re like me, you’ve probably Googled your butt off in your pursuit of better knowledge on how to construct the perfect book. You’ve read infinite articles and posts, trying to decipher the formula. There’s a small problem with that though, and that is…everyone’s saying something different! There’s no clear-cut answer. Everyone insists their advice is Gospel, but there’s also a thousand different preachers giving you a thousand assorted sermons. Got a headache yet? Yeah, not surprising. You’ll hear some authors who swear by the three-act structure and others who condemn it. People will tell you that “word count is everything!” Others will say that you need to follow the trends. And the jury’s still out about whether prologues, epilogues, cliffhangers, clichés, and archetypes are bad or not.

The truth is, when you’re writing for fantasy or paranormal, there’s nothing to fear. There are two things that I think every fantasy and paranormal writing should know.

Don’t be afraid to push the boundaries. As Harry Gray once said, “No one ever achieved greatness by playing it safe.” Fantasy and paranormal are probably the best genres to take risk with your book, to take it to a whole other level. No idea is too strange, no writing style is required, and the laws of 100% logic need not apply. In a genre where wizards train at school, Shadowhunters can be invisible to mortals as they kill demons, and a singular gold ring can bring upon the apocalypse of Middle Earth, it’s clear that there is no limit to where your story can go. So go for it!

Don’t be afraid to let your characters have “Royale With Cheese” moments.
For those unfamiliar with my Pulp Fiction reference, what I mean to say is, don’t refrain from natural dialogue. Some writers will tell you that you should axe any banter that doesn’t progress the plot. This notion does work sometimes, because it can deliver a taut, tightly bound, thrilling story. Others though who try this can still run the risk of having unsuccessful, blatantly scripted prose. Allow your characters to interact with one another like normal people would. When we’re burdened with a problem, is that all we ever talk about? No. We still have everyday chitchats, so why can’t your characters? Yes, they live outside of the realm of the norm, but that doesn’t make them any less human. Realistic, “meaningless” dialogue can actually give the reader better insight into the people in your book. Some authors and editors swear that the DELETE key is the most affective button on your keyboard and that scenes of this nature should be subjected to its function, but I humbly disagree. Ask yourself, is the opening scene in Reservoir Dogs where the characters share a lengthy discussion about Madonna and the etiquette of tipping at a restaurant really relevant to the overall storyline? No, not one bit. BUT…its realism is what makes it one of the most memorable scenes in the entire film, and with good reason. It gives the characters LIFE.

Fun Facts

10 fun facts About Being an Author

Here are the top ten things I love about being an author:

1. No Required Dress Code: While other professions insist on you wearing business suits, dresses, skirts, or uniforms to work, you can rock out in your pajamas when you’re an author!

2. Flexible Hours: 9 to 5? Nope, that rule doesn’t apply here. You work on your own set timeframe. Doesn’t matter whether you have the sleeping habits of a lumberjack or a vampire; it won’t affect your writing process either way.

3. Being able to use the “I’m not crazy, I’m an author!” excuse: As your loved ones spend their days writing up billing reports and marketing strategies, you instead contemplate things like murder, conspiracies, and zombie apocalypses. Best of all, your profession gives you the creative licensing to do so without the fear of being called a nut-bar!

4. Mobile Office: You can work anywhere you like. Whether it’s with the aid of a laptop or good old-fashioned pen and paper, an author can take their stories anywhere at anytime.

5. You get to explore your dark side. As Robert De Niro once said, “One of the things about acting is it allows you to live other people's lives without having to pay the price.” Same goes with writing. You can write about a despicable character that came from the depths of your own mind, a villain who does horrific, bloody, terrifying things, and you can happily walk away from the keyboard with clean hands.

6. Escapism. Sometimes problems in life can get you down, and when you’re a writer, you can translate though issues onto page or completely lose yourself in another world entire. It’s so wonderfully therapeutic.

7. You get to share your stories with the masses! Yes, at times that fact can be downright terrifying because some people may not respond to your book in a positive manner, but discovering that someone enjoyed your work is pretty much the emotional equivalent of finding an unicorn in your backyard! It’s amazing!

8. You see inspiration wherever you go. The greatest ideas can come from
anywhere. Heck, J.K. Rowling was inspired to write Harry Potter by simply taking the train.

9. Writer’s Block allows you to act like a lunatic, and no one can judge you. If you’ve seen The Shining, or Secret Window, or Barton Fink, you know that it’s best to stay clear from a writer when they’re having blockage issues. This means you get the O.K. to go a little mad without friends and family wanting to bind you in a straitjacket.

10. The Book Community is awesome! Bloggers, readers, and other authors have made such an amazing impact on me as a writer. Their feedback really gave me so much confidence in my work.

My Review

Divine Vices by Melissa Parkin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wow! Melissa Parkin is a full on genius! this book has quickly become one of my fav of the year! I love the story to death and the characters where by far the most awesome! Ian especially was a fav of mine!

I have to talk about the ending because I think that was the biggest thing for me I was so surprised by it that I was like NOOOOOOOO this can not be the ending!!!!! I kept flipping the pages back and forth hopping upon some miracle that more writing would appear..lol...sadly none did...lol...It ended so abruptly that it feels so unfinished like the stories still running only the films run out and we are awaiting for the projector to be restrung before we can see what happens next. Its very suspenseful and aggravating all at the same time..lol

ahhh now that I have gotten that out I can talk about the rest of the book which was totally fantastic in every way! I loved the witty banter between the characters it often had me laughing quite hard. I loved Ian so much! I loved the way he dressed and his overall unique character.

The Bad guys were so super creepy! I loved it! you never knew who or what they were till the end and they popped out at the most awful and worst times.

I would highly recommend this book to everyone! it was amazing and unique. Melissa Parkin is a blessed writer who knows how to captivate her audience and leave them hanging! begging for more! get your copies today!

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

Q: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and what made you delve into the world of writing?

Hello! *waves at the computer* Oh, wait, you guys can’t see me. Yeah, I’m a dork. That’s for starters. Let’s start over again. Hi, my name is Melissa Parkin. I hail from the Chicagoland area. I eat more pizza than any human being should. I’m a proud Whovian (Doctor Who fanatic), movie aficionado, music lover, and total bookworm with a mild Dr. Pepper addiction.

Since I was little, I was blessed/cursed with an overly active imagination. Even though I wasn’t a big reader growing up, when the bug of book-loving bit, I became addicted. I’ve always had stories playing in my head for my private entertainment, and it just felt like a natural fit to finally get them down on paper. Can’t say that I’m unhappy with the decision either. :)

Q: Can you please tell us a little about your book Divine Vices and what inspired you to write it?

Divine Vices follows the story of sixteen-year-old Cassie Foster, a high school junior whose life seems to have taken a turn for the dangerous and rather strange. Having lost her mother and sister in a tragic accident at their New York home nine months prior to the start of the book, Cassie’s finally readjusting to her new surroundings when her father moves her to New Haven, Maine. With her best friends, Ian and Gwen, by her side, she’s braving the hells of high school and finding comfort in the fact that things are returning to normal…until the new transfer student, Jackson Matthews, walks into the picture. He’s cocky, sarcastic, devilishly sexy, and proven to be every bit of trouble that comes with his bad boy reputation.

Not only has he taken an unwarranted shining to Cassie, but with his arrival has also come a string of disappearances and a trail of dark events that seems to lead back to her. Is it just a coincidence that these things started when Jackson came to town, or is there something far more sinister at play?

Q: Can you tell us about your writing process? Which comes first? The character's story or the idea for the novel?

With Divine Vices, character development definitely came first. I had such a clear image of everyone and their back stories before the plot of the book ever even came to mind. I wanted to explore the depths of each character prior to entering the writing process. I let my characters interact with one another in scenarios outside of the plot just to see where the chemistry was between each person. It was first time I had ever done that with my characters, and I was fascinated by the inspiration I got out of the practice. It’s what led to the revelations learned later in the book.

Q: Tell us about Ian! He is by far my favourite character in the book. How did his character come into being? (without giving to much away of course…lol)

Well, thank you so much! I’m always happy to hear that. Ian is one of my favorite characters to write for. His personality developed so easily for me. He is one of Cassie’s best friends and New Haven’s resident misfit. He’s devoted, loving, funny, really endearing, and severely misjudged.

When I first started working on the characters for Divine Vices, I was admittedly on a Panic! At the Disco binge. Since Ian happens to be a magician, I wanted his look to be the embodiment of his whole persona, and Brendon Urie’s style was the original inspiration. I didn’t want Ian to be full-fledged Vaudeville though, so I opted to make him a bit more Steampunk. His outward appearance eventually settled on being a happy combination of Sebastian Stan’s portrayal of Jefferson in ABC’s “Once Upon a Time” and Alex Band in his music video for “Tonight.” Ian’s look is classy and old school, but it can still be a bit off-putting to your typical teenage bystander. I adore him!

Q: If you could choose to live the life of one of the characters from your story who would it be?

Honestly, for what’s on the horizon for these characters, I don’t think I’d want to be in any of their shoes! I wish I could be as strong as Cassie, but I’m not sure if I could do her justice if I was in her position.

Q: This is prob the most important question I am going to ask today. WHY?
Why did you end it that way? I totally couldn't believe it when I got to the end that it really was the end....lol

I’m a sadist! Mwah-ha-ha-ha! Okay, no, not really. I’m just one of those people that likes to leave things on a sharp note.

Q: Do you have any strange writing habits (like standing on your head or writing in the shower)?

No, I find putting axes through doors and chasing small children through mazes to be about as strange as I typically go. Nothing as weird as writing in the shower!

Q: What books/authors have influenced your life?

The man who really got me into reading was Chuck Palahniuk. I didn’t like reading when I was younger, but once I found “Fight Club,” I became obsessed with books!

Q: What is next for you? Do you have any scheduled upcoming releases or works in progress?

Right now I’m working on the sequel to Divine Vices, which will be released in the fall. Another project separate from the series is also in the works, but it’s still in its early stages.

Q: Thank you so much for the interview, Melissa Parkin. Would you like to tell my readers where they can find you on the web and where everyone can buy your book?

Absolutely!

10 Things I Wish I Knew About Being an Author I Didn’t Know Before by Sonia Brock

When I started writing, I foolishly believed that hardest part would be actually writing a book. Boy! I was so wrong! The Ten things I wish I knew about being an Author I didn’t know before I began my journey are:

1. Join a writing or book club/workshop. Learn how to develop and present your story before you dig into writing. I joined a couple of groups and these were some of my experiences; I found that while the writing exercises were great in helping me develop my own style and learn to tell a visual story, I did have some trouble with some of the other writers in the groups get upset with criticisms, get a power trip because they think they have a doctorate in literature, or experience a bit of the little green envy monster when you are recognized for some reason or another. You need to know that these things can and will happen, but what you take away from it is worth the trouble.

Reading other peoples books as a reviewer can also help you recognize potential errors and weaknesses that may be affecting your own writing. Use criticism constructively. If there are no errors, there can be no critics. What is an error to some is enlightenment to others, learn to tell the difference.

2. Brush up on your Grammar skills. No matter what your book is about, if it has errors it will be trashed… literally! Literary Agents, Reviewers, etc., will simply stop reading at a certain point if there are too many errors. I cannot stress this enough! I ruined some really good opportunities for myself by not taking care of these things first.

3. Brush up on writing skills and / or rules. Even the most Avant-Guard book will be picked apart by others in the writing community if you don’t have a solid plot, antagonist, protagonist, etc. I thought that because my books might have some immunity to the rules because they were written in a Cajun dialect and certain words and phrases needed to be invented to convey the essence of the culture. Needless to say, I had to make many revisions before I had something worth publishing.

4. Try to make a name for yourself by submitting short stories, poems, writing contests, magazines, newspapers, competing for literary awards, etc. (Glimmer Train is one of the most recognized by publishers and agents.) ANY recognition you get for your work will go a long way toward getting your work published.

5. Start pitching your manuscript ideas to Literary Agents BEFORE you self-publish. Many of them will not even look at self-published authors and you could be shooting yourself in the foot by not submitting to them first. Step #4 helps open that door.

6. Take a class in reading contracts!!! Never sign with anyone for a FEE!!!!! They are scams!!!!! The only cost you should incur to publish your books with a reputable publisher is the postage on the signed contract. Anything other arrangement falls under a vanity press situation. I nearly fell for a couple with a BIG reputation until I heard that there was a price tag attached.

7. Make a marketing plan, if possible, hire a publicist. Your book won’t sell if you don’t know how to get it in front of readers. I know this from experience and have learned from my mistakes. It is well worth the time and trouble.
As a side note: also explore all the free resources available to authors for marketing. You would be surprised how many there are out there!

8. Pick two or three social media sites that you want to use to market your books and start building a following. Having more than that will run you ragged. You should not be stuck on Facebook or Twitter instead of writing. Pick one or two days a week to have a regularly scheduled posting. Another tip I have learned is how to link together some of these sites so that you are only posting on one and the posts are picked up automatically by the others. It is a great time-saver!

9. Make time to WRITE!!!! That is the primary objective in a writing career. You should have more time scheduled for writing than any other thing you can do. Determine if you want to be a full-time writer and then WRITE FULL TIME!!!! Spending less than 4 hours a day writing is part-time! If you write at home as most writers do, treat it just like you would any telecommuting career. Be dedicated and focused. Keep your workplace free from distractions ….. and that INCLUDES THE INTERNET!!!! The more you write the more you will publish, the more you publish, the greater your chances are for earning income.

10. After all that, I have learned that when you are writing your book, you are the King of the Mountain, Emperor of your own Domain. Nothing else matters. Write what you feel strongly about. Write with emotion. Develop your own style (regardless of the “RULES”). Don’t listen too much to the critics so that it turns you away from your writing. Learn from your mistakes and move FORWARD. If you don’t write and put it out there, your voice will NEVER BE HEARD!

Had I know these things in the beginning, well… I might be wealthy by now or I might be just where I am …. Happily writing the next book!!!!

Oh! One more thing…. If you get stuck, don’t force it. Maybe you veered away from where you were meant to go earlier in the story and that is the reason your direction doesn’t fit now. I got this advice from Kim Harrison who was kind enough to answer a plea for help last year. It has helped me more times that I would like to admit!

I hope all of this helps you as a writer. I know learning these things was not easy for me and I am by far an expert, but these are the lessons I have learned thus far and if they can benefit anyone of you in any way, then I am truly grateful

My Interview

I got to interview the wonderful and talented Sonia Brock author of The Inheritance of the Swamp Witch and A Swamp Witch's Welcome. Both were fantastic books full of amazing fights, love and most of all fantastic people and creatures!Sonia has come today to tell us all about her wonderful books so lets sit back and enjoy the ride!

Q: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and what made you delve into the world of writing?

Wow! That’s actually an easy one!  In high school, my English teacher told me that I had a gift that needed to be developed.  As a dedicated Art student, I thought she was crazy.  As I grew older, I began to tell people what it was like for me growing up in Southern Louisiana, the myths and legends, customs and Cajun way of life and my adventures as a child.  Many times I had been told that I needed to write a book.  ( I know, I know, EVERY new author says that, but it really is true!)

I tried a couple of times to write my own story and it just never seemed to get very far.  Then I took some wise advice.  Write what you know, write what YOU want to read.  I am a horror fan.  I love vampires, witches and monsters that you can DO something about.  (Not like the everyday monsters we face in reality).  I found myself with time on my hands and the stories just started pouring out so fast, I could barely get them written fast enough!

Q: Can you please tell us a little about your books The Inheritance of a Swamp Witch and A Witch's Welcome and what inspired you write them?

The Inheritance of a Swamp Witch started out as an experiment to see if I could do it.  By the time I was halfway through, I had planned a whole series of books based on the characters I had created.  My Grandmother played a big part in the inspiration for these books.  (You want to talk about a colorful character?  Boy! Was she ever!)  Several people thought that I had injected myself in the character of MaMere, but those that knew my Grandmother, understood.

(Trying not to get too long-winded here) The Inheritance of a Swamp Witch and a Witch’s Welcome are the first two books in the Swamp Witch series.  They revolve around a reporter who takes a chance and risks everything for the story that will change his life.  He travels to Louisiana to uncover a mystery and gets more than he bargained for when he meets the legendary Swamp Witch.

I am sure you have realized by now that the titles of the books are a play on words.  If I revealed the real identity and purpose behind the Swamp Witch, the books would be the same old thing everyone else is doing and you would get bored really fast.  I have a virtual gumbo of characters for you to enjoy and savor!  Just be patient and let your literary pallet enjoy the ride!

Q: Can you tell us about your writing process? Which comes first? The character's story or the idea for the novel?

A little of both actually.  The first book, well all rules were broken!  I wrote as I created and let it lead me.  I have been criticized for this by other writing professionals, but my fans seem to have enjoyed my rebellion.   For the second and third books I used a different tactic and made an outline of the where I wanted my story to go and who I wanted to have in it first.  Then having a blueprint to keep me from getting lost, I let the creativity take over again.

I am currently in the process of flushing out the remaining outline for book 4 Hawk’s Spell!

Q: I loved all the elements and the different characters you brought together for these stories. How did you bring together so many characters and not get confused on who was who?

In my mind, the characters are real people to me.  They are a close knit community struggling to overcome the adversities that come their way just like we do in our everyday lives.  Some of the characters, I will admit were somewhat inspired by people that inspired me.  Each character has a unique personality and purpose.  The Cajun people are always colorful and full of life.  I was fortunate to have grown up surrounded by people that were always having adventures!

Q: In The Inheritance of a Swamp Witch we meet MaMere and the family and see some incredible powers, in particular some extinct and mythical creatures. Why these creatures? And What did you do to research them?

You know, this is the first time I have been asked this question…THANK YOU!  Although I love horror, I am a Christian and have a strong faith in God.  Throughout my life, I have experimented with several religions trying to find the right fit for me.  I will be honest, my Grandmother did practice a bit of her own brand of magic, but she encouraged me to find my own path.  She also taught me that ALL things come from God.  I know that this sounds like a dichotomy, but if you think about it, she was right.

Anyway, through my research, I found some basic similarities in all religions.  So, I began with mythology because it dates back further than our modern Christianity, but the religious implications are still evident.  I wanted a Grandmother figure, but found that the Greek and Roman versions just didn’t strike the right note I wanted, so I went further back to the Titans.

When it came to their powers, I took the advice of a Greek Scholar I connected with on LinkedIN and he told me that the history of the Goddess Tethys was vague, but that she embodied the spirit of maternity or Grandmother hood.  I created her powers based on the deal she made with our Christian God when he banished all other Gods and allowed her to remain.  Tethys is the mother of Nereids creatures similar in description to mermaids though her connection with Poseidon.  Many of the other creatures come from various legends and myths and are part of a world of supernatural creatures trying to function in a Human population.

Q: In A Witch's Welcome we meet the big bad fea Queen. How did you come up with all the brilliant battle strategies in this one?

Another good one!  I have read about and been surrounded by the possibility of magic all my life.  It was natural for me to use one of my favorite evil characters to be Maab.

As far as the battle strategies, I am a former United States Marine Corps Military Police Officer!  I have a green belt in Hapkido and have studied Tai Kwan Do.  I also have a martial arts specialist that will work out the scenes in live action with me so I can get them just right!  Here is a pic of Troy so you will understand.

Q:  Do you have any strange writing habits (like standing on your head or writing in the shower)?

HAHA!  I pace! I walk around the house working out the story and dialog out loud.  My neighbors think I’m nuts!  Sometimes I begin sketching out a scene on paper and then turn it into words.  By the way, I do all my own artwork for the covers!  I have the complete drawings available in prints as well.

Q: What books/authors have influenced your life?

Too many!  Just kidding, I read a lot of Jim Butcher, Steven King, Kellie Armstrong, Illona Andrews, Kim Harrison, Charlaine Harris, Laurell K Hamilton, are just a few!  I am an avid reader!

Q: What is next for you? Do you have any scheduled upcoming releases or works in progress?

As a matter of fact, yes I have just released the collection of short stories that center around MaMere called De Lady Down de Bayou and I am working on Hawk’s Spell that should be ready for release later this fall.

Q: Thank you so much for the interview, Sonia Brock. Would you like to tell my readers where they can find you on the web and where everyone can buy your book?

As a child, I loved reading so much that I not only read in bed, at the table and in the bath, but in the shower and – not so successfully – on my bicycle.

I enjoyed books in a slightly unorthodox way, too – many of my childhood books have ragged edges where I tore paper from the margins in order to eat it.

I wrote my first book at eight. It was entitled The Dragon in the Teapot and would probably have been a huge hit if I hadn’t lost the only copy on a family day out.

Some years later, armed with several different types of backups, I’m busy writing romantic science fiction and fantasy for young adults and adults.

I live with my partner, our two teenage daughters, and three cats, near Sherwood Forest in England. I’m a Christian, a feminist, and a lover of cheese, chocolate, stationery shops and eighties pop music. I still read in most places, but I no longer eat paper.

I’m a member of The Romantic Novelists’ Association, the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, the group blogs The Lucky 13s and Author Allsorts, and the online writers’ community Romance Divas. I’m represented by Mandy Hubbard of D4EO Literary Agency.

Posted by wiccawitch4 on 11:19:00 am

Summer's Temptation by  Ashley Lynn Willis
Genre: New Adult, Contemporary
Release Date: July 7th, 2014

If there are only three truths in life, they are these. Women will always try to change a man. Men will always say anything to get a girl in bed. Tyler Mason will always have a long line of girls trying to domesticate him, and none will succeed. If one of these ceases to be true, the world will cease to exist.

These are the rules as college student Cassie Faye knows them, so when she gives up on dating in favor of a man who can satisfy her without tempting her heart, her next-door neighbor Tyler tops the list. Tyler isn’t the type of boy Cassie would fall for, but he’s the perfect guy to teach her how to claim her sexual independence without losing her heart in the process. Too late, Cassie finds out that under his womanizing exterior is an attentive, considerate lover who brings out passions in her that she'd barely glimpsed before.

What if she’s wrong about the third truth? What if the world as she knows it is about to cease to exist?
